Math? In the summer? Yes, I say! (Though not everyday…) Math in the summer can be super helpful and necessary and *gasp* even enjoyable.
Professor B can help. What is Professor B? So glad you asked. It’s an interactive website for, well, for math. It’s designed to build a good, firm foundation in math mastery in ages PreK-8th.
I’ll be honest – at first I was a little frustrated that there was no sound included with the lessons. It seemed like something was wrong or broken with my computer because it just LOOKS like it should have sound attached! The lack of audio, however, is intentional on behalf of the company. They found that when sound is included, parents and teachers leave kids alone with the program and really it’s designed to be interactive between you and your child.
We reviewed the Level II version for 3rd-5th grade. This level is also appropriate for older kids who need some extra help with some basic facts. It covers multiplication, division, and problem solving. It introduces fractions and covers fractional equivalence and addition/subtraction of fractions.
Here’s a screenshot of what the intro page for Level I looks like (we received Levels 1, 2, and 3):
Okay, so honestly it has a bit of a clunky interface, but in spite of it’s quirks, it really seems to work!
The hope really is that your child will master 3 years of facts with just one year of Professor B. I had my just-completed-6th-grader “tutor” my just-completed-3rd-grader in these lessons so that my 3rd grader was not left alone with the program. Here’s my sneaky hint: It was super great review for my 6th grader too! I was really impressed with the motivation my 3rd grader had to keep going with the lessons.
I also like that I could download hard copies of all the lessons as well. Because of all the different levels provided, you can take a placement test for free. You also have the option to purchase subscriptions to these lessons one month at a time (for $20/month for one level with discounts given on subsequent levels), or you can purchase it a whole year at a time.
Not too shabb-e-e-e-e *groan* and much cheaper than private math tutoring! Click here for more info about Professor B. You can also check out a sample lesson right here.
