Last week I put out the call to fellow homeschool moms in our blended model school to help donate books on behalf of Novo Ministries here in Oklahoma City. Y’all, the homeschool mamas did NOT disappoint! They brought in books! And it was fun to see more Nick Jr. books included in the donations to add to what I purchased on my Walmart shopping trip which you can see in this Google + photo album here!
Y’all, between us, we gathered 421 books to donate to the kids at Novo Ministries! YEE HAW!!
And do you know what happens when kids are around piles and piles of books? Guess what? They READ. My kids couldn’t help themselves. Fresh books in our house? Even with the bajillion we already have? Yes, I let them read. They then put them back in the boxes so we could donate them. Katie is actually finishing up some school work with the book she’s reading. Millie picked that Magic Tree House book out of one of the boxes. Then on the way to Novo, they both dipped into the boxes for a bit. I LOVE that. I know the Novo kids will too.
We went to Novo this afternoon and my girls were happy to help bring in the haul. Those were heavy boxes too!
After getting them all in, Millie lamented over one of the books in the boxes. I love that she loves books, but I knew she still had tons of favorites back at home so I convinced her it was time to let this one go to a new home. *grin*
We then let the Novo staff know we were there and proceeded to help move all the books back into their conference room. They were thrilled to get the books! And pretty excited at the amount, too!
When I returned home I discovered this tweet:
Pretty fun! And of course, I LOVE doing these projects. And the Veritas moms who contributed did as well.
You all, this is such an important cause. 421 books donated in just one small book drive is great and all, but we’re trying to help 20 million people here. PLEASE figure out how you can get involved. You can host your own Big Help Book Drive. Be one of millions helping millions.
Champions for Kids wants to know if you participate. Be sure to tell them who you donated to here. You can also upload pictures here too.
Do you have a stash of kids’ books lying around collecting dust at your house? DONATE THEM TO KIDS WHO CAN USE THEM!! Sure, it’s awesome to gather your friends together and collect a really big pile-o-books, but if all you really can do right now is collect from your own personal stash, THEN DO IT. There are kids out there who need you to.
It may seem like such a small thing to you right now, but it’s huge. And lives will be changed as a result.
