It may sound funny to hear me talk about family fun with BB guns, after all, of the six of us, five of us are female, and we don’t exactly live in the country. But neither of those are good reasons to NOT enjoy or appreciate the fun of the BB gun! In fact, the girls first learned to shoot while visiting their grandparents’ farm in rural Illinois. So when the opportunity to check out the Daisy Red Ryder BB Guns arose, I jumped on it – I knew my kids would LOVE this. What I didn’t know was that my dad would as well!
We were visiting my parents’ house last weekend when I casually mentioned to everyone that we’d be taking a trip to Bass Pro Shops in a few days to pick up a Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun. The girls all squealed and my dad excitedly informed me that he had THREE of them out in the garage. THREE! Three Daisy Red Ryder BB Guns. These were vintage ones. He went out to find them.
Aside from their BB gun experience on the farm, my girls have never handled guns before, so we wanted to make clear that we had some expectations on them. Among these, that they have to carry the gun pointing straight up or straight down, no exceptions, period. Also, they are never to shoot without adult supervision. No exceptions, period. My dad was all over it, though. He spent the next couple of hours outside showing the girls how to load, how to aim, and how to shoot. Our whole Saturday BB gun with Papa experience is detailed in this Google + photo album right here!
I really appreciate this list of shooting safety rules on the Daisy website. Of the ten rules listed here, my husband came up with 6 of the same rules off the top of his head when the girls began this activity on Saturday. The others are good reminders too, and not ones we naturally thought of, so it’s definitely a smart idea to take a peek there and review all of them with your kids!
The fun thing about these Daisy guns is their enduring (and endearing) reputation. How many of us had our first exposure to Daisy through The Christmas Story? “You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out!” Ring a bell, anyone? Of course! It’s a classic. Granted, when I watched the movie with my kids back in 2003 we had to turn it off (not exactly language-appropriate for the young set…). Still, the overall theme of nostalgia and family and fun will always stick in my head. Likewise, the Daisy brand will always bear those marks in my mind as well. With that in mind, I was excited to load up the girls and head to Bass Pro Shops to pick out our new Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun!
When it was time to check out, the sales clerk took one look at our Daisy Red Ryder and grinned. She said, “Isn’t that the “You’ll shoot your eye out” gun? I didn’t even know that was a real BB gun! I didn’t realize we carried it here!” We had a fun little chat about that while I paid for the purchase. You can see how much fun we had at the Bass Pro Shops right here in this Google + photo album! Hint: We had SO much fun!
When we got home the girls finished their school work and then we got busy figuring out our new gun. The box came with a fun little nostalgic tin of BBs – pretty cute!
We actually had a glitch with the first gun we brought home and had to take it back. Bass Pro Shops made that process pretty seamless, so that was a relief! Our new gun is doing much better, which is also a relief!
And Maddie wishes you would excuse her pajama-clad self. She was just too excited to wait. She had the BB gun all to herself for a bit tonight while her sister were away for the evening. She took full advantage of that. *grin* Truly she had a #bb4me experience tonight!
All in all, a super fun time with many more to come! Here’s hoping that the Daisy Red Ryder BB Guns will provide as much family fun and enjoyment in another 30 years just as they did for my family this week!
